Monte Alban during the rainy season. The flowering tree in the foreground is a common sight around Monte Alban.

Monte Alban was begun by the Zapotecs around 2000 years ago. At its peak it was the ceremonial center of a city thousands strong, which in turn was the center of a far-reaching Zapotec empire.

During the dry season, the green lushness seen here turns barrenly dry.
